Are We There Yet?

It is hard, if not mind boggling, to imagine that there are billions and billions of stars, some 200 billion in the known Universe and we merely inhabit a lone piece of rock going around a single star we call the Sun.

Also incomprehensible is the vastness and expanse of space. We have so far been able to peer distances equating to some estimated 13.7 billion lights years. It is said that the known cosmos has a diamter equivalent to 93 billion light years.

To put things in perspective...light travels at an approximate speed of almost 290,000km per second. So, one light year equates to light travelling non-stop at 290,000km x 60sec to a minute x 60min to an hour x 24hours to a day x 365days to a year.
And that's how far light travels in a single light year. Now multiply that figure by x 13.7 billion light years. That's how 'big' the Universe is. Even if one is able to count its distance beginning from zero, it would take more that 1,000 life times of non-stop counting before actually coming to the end of the figure or entire sum.

And here we are, the humanrace, scurrying about in our little speck of rock called Earth, behaving as though we are the centre of all things and master of everything. If you consider the vastness of space....we are truly insignificant.

Yet, each time I gaze at the heavens, I stand in awe and humility...realizing that my presence and being is a mere atom in the vastness of space and time. What seems beyond understanding is how the humanrace continues to live with the insatiable lust and greed for more...more of everything yet devoid of meaning and peace. As it was aptly put...'what does a man profit if he gains the whole world yet loses his soul'.

I hope more will pause for a moment, take a step back on a cloudless night and look up at the heavens to ponder God's wonderous and magnificant creation...then maybe, just maybe..we may come to a realization that we are nothing and learn to live life with a little more respect and dignity.
To None I Wish Ill But To All I Wish Peace And Love.
